HOME Error: While Connecting Your Navigation Device Or Memory Card

At times, when you try to connect your navigation device or memory card to the TomTom HOME application. Then, you may get the “TomTom HOME Error”. As such, the connection fails and you cannot proceed further. This problem can occur due to an issue with the application or the device.

Before going for the troubleshooting procedure, you must first determine whether the problem is due to the application or the device. For this, follow the given steps.

  • First of all, close down “TomTom HOME” if it is still open after providing the “Error Message”.
  • Then, disconnect the “Navigation Device” or “Memory Card” from your computer.
  • Thereafter, start the “TomTom HOME” again.
  • Now, see if it starts up or not. In case if you cannot start it. Then, the problem is due to “TomTom HOME”. However, in case if it starts even when the device is not connected. Then, the problem is due to your GPS device.

Troubleshoot Issues With TomTom HOME Application

In order to resolve the problem with the application, you should first uninstall and re-install it. 

Uninstall TomTom HOME

Uninstalling TomTom HOME from your system is possible only if you are logged in to your computer as an Administrator. Hence, ensure the same. Then, follow the given steps to uninstall it from your Windows or Mac computers respectively.

From Windows

  1. First of all, click on the Windows “Start” menu.
  2. Then, click on “Control Panel” to open it.
  3. Now, click on “Programs and Features”. However, in case, if you get the “Programs” option in “Control Panel”. Then, click on it followed by “Programs and Features”.
  4. Thereafter, select “TomTom HOME” from the list of installed applications on the next window.
  5. After that, click on “Uninstall” located right above the list of options.
  6. As a result, it will remove the application.

From Mac

  1. Open the “Finder” window from the “Dock” i.e. from the very bottom of your screen.
  2. Then, select “Applications” from the following window.
  3. Subsequently, locate “TomTom HOME” from the list of applications.
  4. Now, click and drag it to the “Trash” Folder. (Else, right-click on it. Then, select “Move To Trash”)

Re-install TomTom HOME

Before proceeding for installation, ensure that you have the latest version of this application downloaded on your system. You can easily get it from TomTom’s Support page.

For Windows

  1. First of all, locate the “Setup File” and double-click on it.
  2. Then, click on “Run”.
  3. Now, select your preferred “Language” from the drop-down menu. Then, click on “OK”.
  4. As such, it will open the Installer. Now, click “Next”.
  5. Thereafter, click the link for “End User Licence Agreement” and read the document.
  6. Subsequently, tick mark the box beside the link and click “Next”.
  7. On the “Destination Folder” window, click “Next” to proceed with the default location. Else, click on “Change” and provide location if you want to save it at another location.
  8. Finally, click on “Install”. Meanwhile, if prompted by “User Account Control” box, then click ‘Yes”.
  9. Hence, it starts the installation. 
  10. Now, wait for the process to complete. Then, click on “Finish”. 

For Mac

  1. First of all, locate the “Setup File” and double-click on it.
  2. Now, double-click the TomTom icon to extract the files.
  3. Then, click on “Continue”.
  4. Thereafter, click the link for “End User Licence Agreement” and read the document.
  5. Subsequently, tick mark the box beside the link and click “Continue”.
  6. If prompted, click on “Agree”.
  7. Finally, click “Install”.
  8. Then, enter your Mac Admin Credentials and click “Install Software”.
  9. Now, wait for the process to complete. Then, click “Close”.

Troubleshoot Issues With TomTom GPS Device/ Memory Card

  1. First and foremost, charge your device for at least 2 hours.
  2. Now, connect the USB cable to your computer. At this point, you have to plug in the cable only to the system. It should not be “plugged in” to the device. Besides that, make sure it is “plugged in” directly into the USB port of your computer (CPU). It shouldn’t be “plugged in” to USB hub/ port on your keyboard or monitor.
  3. Next, you should “Switch On” the TomTom device.
  4. Once it is “On”, “Press and Hold” the “Power” button until it displays “White Text” on the screen.
  5. Once it shows the “White Text”, quickly “Press and Release” the “Power” button for three times in succession. It is important to complete this step quickly.
  6. As such, you will get a Blank screen. Then, it reboots the device into “Recovery Mode”.
  7. Thereafter, quickly plug in the “USB Cable” to the device while it is rebooting.
  8. As a result, “TomTom HOME” will immediately start “Restoring” the software on your device.
  9. The application will keep you posted with the progress which may take 5-30 minutes.
  10. Subsequently, your device will boot up and you can see the “Maps” screen.
  11. As such, your TomTom device is restored. Now, you can disconnect it.
